The final scene in Powder has stuck with me since I first saw it years ago. It was a strange and yet somehow perfectly apt visual ending to a story about alienation, cruelty and outsiders.
Around the time I was painting the Superman series (Savior, etc) I was really into creating these loose broad brushed skies, built up from layering large washes of acrylic which I overworked with watercolour pencils to bring focus where I wanted it. This canvas was originally meant to be yet another in the Superman series, but I had recently rewatched Powder and felt the mood would suit a rendering of the movie finale better. It did. I had fun painting it, working with some finer detail on the lightning and glow around his hands, and I think I mostly pulled it off, even if some parts still cry out to be reworked when I look at it. One day..
